Presently external hard drives are having standard SATA, IDE, and SCSI in a portable disk enclosures with SCSI, USB, IEEE 1394 Firewire, eSATA client interfaces for connecting them with the computer.

Previously the commercial hard drive was quite bigger and was unable to stored in the computer applications. And as a result external hard drives were only get connected within the definitions of external hard disk in several devices. Modern external hard drives are compatible with different kind of operating systems supporting the important interfaces such as USB MSC and IEEE1394.

External hard drives balance the platters and rotating the heads of traditional hard drives in these devices. External hard drives do not have capability of facing physical shocks in comparison to flash based technologies. Previous small MP3 players manufactured on external hard drives techonlogies but today they are coming in solid states as compact flash devices for consumers usage.
